Mercedes 608 D Ruthmann Autotransporter, 1982
This special vehicle was ordered by the Porsche works in Stuttgart through Ruthmann in Gescher-Hochmoor, a specialist in vehicle conversions. A clever hydraulic system to fold away the rear wheels allowing the loading platform to descend all the way to the ground has been installed, facilitating loading of cars with very low ground clearance. In order to complete this modification the 608D chassis even had to be converted to front-wheel-drive. Registered by the Porsche factory on the 27th June 1983, the car was used in and around the factory for the next 19 years. On the 24th June 2002, the car was laid up but re-registered by the next owner in September of the same year. After another German owner the car was stored for a number of years, before being imported into Switzerland in 2018. The car provides a loading area of 5,75 meters in lenght and an electric winch. With a total permitted weight of 7'490 kg, the payload is a very useful 3'250 kg. Copies of the original order and all technical data is available. The 3.8 litre Diesel runs, the car is driveable and the hydraulics work. Once restored, it will make a very useful transporter for a Porsche collector or a racing team with historic racers. The car has German registration and Swiss duties have been paid. Finally the right vehicle to transport your 962!
