This beautiful bird cage with 3 singing birds from aprox. 1885 is very rare and has a coin operated mechanism to activate the "singing". It's still is in perfect condition. Blaise Bontems (1814 - 1881) was the first inventor to really reproduce mechanically the singing of birds, but this particular piece is most likely made by his son – Charles Bontems. These birdcages were not ment to be toys or novelties, but rather pieces of art for the rich and famous of the second half of the 19th century.
